Green decorated boards, using the frieze of the Parthenon as the motif. With 44 illustrations and 3 coloured maps, one of Greece in the late nineteenth century, two of Ancient Greece. All edges gilt. The illustrations (almost certainly engravings from photographs) include the Lion Gate at Mycenae, the Vale of Tempe, the Athenian Acropolis, Sicyon and many more, and manage to give a real feel for what the landscape was like in the nineteenth century. Gift inscription to front free end paper dated 1885. Condition: Boards worn but still attractive. Some foxing. Some pencil underlining and marking to margins. Photographs available.
