Bookplate to the rear paste down: “Ronald William Poulton Palmer B.A. Oxon. Born 12th September, 1889. Killed in action in Flanders, May 5, 1915. He captained the English Rugby Football Team in 1914, and was in all his ways a leader of men”. A quotation from the preface on the dangers of urban life to adolescents (in 1912): “never has youth been exposed to such dangers… Increasing urban life, with its temptations, prematurities, sedentary occupations, and passive stimuli…”.
