Two volumes, complete. Volume 1 ex-library, from the library of South African Railways, Johannesburg; Volume 2 has no library indications. Green cloth-covered boards, gilt titles to spine, blind-stamped titles to front boards, Volume 1 514 pages, Volume 2 paginated to 1194. Many illustrations from photographs. A comprehensive and fascinating account of the ways in which the railways were involved in and affected by the First World War. Condition: For both volumes, the boards are rather knocked and rubbed, but the binding is sound. There is some age darkening to the pages, but they are unmarked. The text blocks are firm and the photographs bright. Volume 1 is the better-preserved of the two; there are library stamps to half-title, title page, first page of Preface, on Page 3 and the rear end paper, but little foxing. Volume 2 has rubbing and discolouration to the front board, slight bumping to the text block (affecting roughly the first one tenth of the thickness, depressing the text block so that the top edge of the page has a slight indent), and soiling to the fore-edges and external top edges. Volume 2 also has some foxing, notably to p 599 and (to a lesser extent) preceding and following pages, and page 668 (similarly affecting the immediately preceding/succeeding pages).
