Further Details
Three volumes (comprising six logical volumes), complete, published 1899-1900. Sub-title: ‘being a complete topographical dictionary of the United Kingdom’. With numerous illustrations (small images in run of text, typically from photographs) and sixty maps (plates, coloured, folding). Red cloth-covered boards, black titles to front board and spine. Volume 1 A-FROME Part 1 paginated 1-480 Part 2 1-472; Volume 2 FROM-NEW Part 1 1-472, Part 2 1-472; Volume 3 NEW-Z Part 1 1-472, Part 2 1-472 pages. With 60 maps but only 59 unique maps. A manufacturing fault has resulted in the following error: instead of Map IV for Scotland (the bulk of Sutherland) required in Volume 2 Part 2 at page 241, there is a second copy of the map V of Scotland (Caithness). All other maps collate as required. Condition: Some foxing to verso of maps and to face of several maps, typically along the creases. Foxing to end papers, age toning/darkening to margins of earliest pages of each volume. Boards rubbed and with wear, especially to Volume 3, whose spine is split away from the front board for 2 or 3 inches at the top; the text block of this volume is detached from the rear board. Dust soiling to bottom external edges of text blocks, staining to same of Volume 1 (but no staining to pages or maps). Text block of Volume 3 is a little warped.
