Seventh edition, ‘Illustrated with Sculptures’. Pull out genealogical table of the Royal Family, from William the Conqueror to George I, to front, frontispiece and other engravings. 562 pp plus an index. Condition: Modern rebacking, with new linen spine strip and much- bumped and scratched leather-covered boards. The restoration is best described as workmanlike. Ownership inscriptions include ink to front board: J. Howell, Llanhamlach Rectory, Brecon 1869, and the same to the front paste down, together with a printed label with the same information. Many other instances of the Rev. John Howell’s insistence on ownership throughout the book, including a small printed label pasted in as a tail piece to one chapter (did he not trust his parishioners?). To the verso of the title page is a pasted in illustration of a family crest and motto (Honor Praemium Virtutis) again with the Rev. John Howell’s name above and below. All of this John Howelling may mean, of course, anything or nothing. Engravings all in good condition, binding firm.
