Maroon boards, gilt titles. Volume I consists of a series of biographical sketches of historical figures (including Robert Burns, Frederick the Great and Gladstone, to take a few at random). Volume II is a series of essays divided into four groups: Vignettes, Scottish History and Character, The Service of the State and Genius Loci. Condition: Boards somewhat knocked, roughly trimmed pages, a little foxing to prelims and external page edges. Owner’s plate to front paste downs, a little pencil annotation to Contents pages. Overall, a nice set.
