Blue-green boards with gilt titles and decoration. 370 pages plus an appendix (a series of short bibliographies) and index. With illustrations and three maps. Gift inscription to front free end paper, and (later) the library stamp of E.A.Ellis (Ted Ellis). Condition: Externally, worn along joints and at edges but overall sound. Internally clean and sound, save for an ink splash in the margins of page 89. A small note has been pasted in (I suspect by the original owner or gift giver) to page 37. The note is an extra sentence which had been edited out of the final, printed edition. There are a few very short, neat notes in the margins. Plates and maps are all in good, clean condition.
