Further Details

Complete in three volumes. Volume 1 contains a Memoir of Rollin and Preface (ppi-xlvi), 624 pp of the History, and 11 maps, fold-out, bound in together to rear; Volume 2 781 pp (including chronological and geographical tables) plus index to the first two volumes; Volume 3 consists of ‘The History of the Arts and Sciences of the Ancients’, (565 pp), a volume of material omitted from most other early English editions after the first English edition of 1740. The publishers presented this material as a single volume so that it could be bought separately by those who had earlier editions lacking this material. It finishes with a Supplement by the Editor (pp 566 to 617) the Editor’s ‘Conclusion of the Whole Work’ (621-622), plus index to this last volume. Each volume has an engraved title page (undated) preceding the text title page. Volume 1 also has a frontispiece portrait of Charles Rollin, and Volume 2 a frontispiece engraving showing sending of signals by fire. Volume 3 has two illustrations, one of the layout of a Roman camp (caption lost by trimming) and the other (fold-out) illustrating a Roman triumph. Half leather over marbled boards. Condition: Boards rubbed, leather worn, spines rubbed and chipped, lacking labels. The label of volume 3 is present but detached, and having been left betweeh the front end papers has stained them. Binding firm, boards firmly attached. Maps entire but with foxing, some with rolled edges. Engraved title pages and frontispieces somewhat foxed/aged-darkened (especially Volume 3).
