Co-author John Middleton. “This is a book by experts, for experts. It is a mine of information for those who are interested in the architecture of railway stations in the South Eastern counties of the country”. Exactly. Lots of fabulous photographs of railway stations. There is a whole chapter on platform shelters, and another on valancing. Written before railway stations were renamed (why?) train stations, but even in 1971 the problem of the cost of rebuilding was a crucial issue. Sadly and ironically, this collection of photographs of beautiful buildings and their ornamentation is preceded by the claim that “Complete reconstruction with modern methods and materials is the only way to get rid of a picture of an outdated form of transport in the public’s mind.” At the time of publication the rebuilders were having their way, and “a start has been made and some of the new stations are shown in Section 7 of this book”- and very ugly they are too. Condition: Ex-library. Dust jacket inexpertly stuck to book with sellotape, with consequent damage. Previous owner’s name to front free end paper. The photographs, however, are all clean and unmarked.
